Coming from everywhere!  -  We are coming up from San Francisco to spend Thanksgiving with my husband's family, who lives in the Portland area.  We used to live in Boston and did a turkey trot there every year, so we were looking for a similar event in Portland.  Looking forward to it!
Thanks, Elise

The race will officially begin at 9:30.  The event anticipates 500 participants - and we all can't start at once!  We will have a wave start with the faster runners starting first.  Every 30 seconds after that we will have 20-30 more runners begin the race.  Each runner will receive his or her own start time by virtue of the world-class timing equipment that allows individual starting times.  Your time starts when you cross the starting line.
Uberthons is the only running group in Portland or Seattle with this great timing equipment!  Chip-timed, keep the chip.  Radio Frequency Identification Chips on the back of your bib.  Your name in the lights on Thanksgiving morning on big screen TV's.  Wear your bib chest high on the front!

Chip-timed RaceJaquar_logo

The Turkeython event deserves the best, so Uberthons is bringing its latest and greatest timing equipment.  The 5K and 10K will be chip-timed, and your results will be instantly available at the race site and on the webpage.  For those of you who are competitive, this race is not gun-timed, rather it is chip-timed.  That means, your starting time begins when you cross the starting line.  You have not seen the likes of this timing equipment before!

If you are in a race that places you way in the back at the start, others will not have an unfair advantage because you have the same privilege of having a real time - start to finish - as those who were placed at the head of the pack.  Don't tell anyone, but that really means your time could be the fastest even though you started at the back of the pack.  Life really is fair after all!

uberthonslogoThe event is an Uberthons sanctioned event.  This event meets a participation requirement for the National Championship Event in Las Vegas on November 17, 2012.  To learn about the qualifications of being invited to the National Event as an elite runner of as a person who enjoys getting fit and having fun while doing so, click on the National Championship button on Uberthons Home Page.  We may see you there.

10K Course will follow the 5K course twice.

Age Group Categories

Age group categories are: 0-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60+  Age groups will be set so no more than 24 runners in an age group.

The Turkeython event is For Fun, For Competition, and For Fitness.  If a question arises before or during the event about starting times or any other aspect of the event, Uberthons will make a determination of the answer to the question based on providing the most benefit to the most participants.  Uberthons does not guarantee anyone he or she will set a personal record at the Turkeython, nor will Uberthons provide any special priorities to those who wish to set a personal record.  Uberthons hopes you do set a personal record in the event. The event is managed for the pleasure and enjoyment of most of the participants and spectators.  Anyone who tries to circumvent the management of this event for his or her own benefit will be asked to leave the event, and, as always, we wish you well, and we will refund your registration fee.  Have a great Thanksgiving.

An invitation to all runners/walkers

We appreciate your interest in the Turkeython - it should be quite an event.  You may even PR at this event!  This event is not like the Uberthons Invitational held in October at the Portland International Raceway where the Uberthons 5k record was broken, and many PR's were set.  The PIR venue is a fast venue.  The Turkeython venue, like the PIR, is fast, and the Turkeython is pretty - and nice.  We hope you set a Turkeython venue PR.  The parks are open to the public, so be aware of early-morning joggers and walkers.
The Turkeython will be attended by several groups of people.  They are:
  • Folks who want to do something special, like run a 5k or 10k.  This may be the first time for them.
  • Folks who enjoy other people who strive to do something more.  People like being around others with the same goals.
  • Folks who want his or her family to experience a running/racing atmosphere.  Get the kids to enjoy running early, they say.
  • Folks who are making new resolutions.
  • Folks who want to run it off before they put it in.
  • Folks who want to impress themselves.
  • Folks who want to try to set a personal record.
  • Folks who want to share something special with the community.

Our timing system is composed of RFID antennas and chips.  The chips are disposable.  No one else in the Portland or
Seattle areas uses the same system.  You have seen the system on this website.  The system can be used for gun starts or chip starts, meaning the individual start times begin when a runner crosses the start line as you know.  We plan to use two systems that are in sync with each other.  One system will record start times, and the other will record finish times.  This allows for interval-starting times.

We know you want to set a PR.  And, we know you are capable.  The Uberthons 5k record is 16:00 set by Brian Bernier of McMinnville just last week at the Portland International Raceway Invitational.  Many runners set PR's at the PIR event.  Some of our events are not venues in which a runner should try to set a PR.  For instance, Brian ran a 17:30 split on the 10k at Mt. Tabor.  He did not break the Uberthons record on the 10k, but would have broken it had the event been at the PIR Invitational instead of on an ancient volcano, which had a lot of terrain changes.  He did, however, set a PR for the venue.  He will strive to set PR's at different venues as we hold them.  It will be a Venue PR. Champoeg Park and Magnuson Park in Seattle are other good places to set a PR, and Uberthons will provide many venues in which a lifetime PR may be set. Uberthons does not hold events on roads with traffic or curbs. Earlier this year, Uberthons held a memorial run for the family of a mother/wife who was run over and killed by a truck while she was on a run.  Uberthons do not have runners participate in events on roads with curbs and trucks that run over people.

And, bring all your friends.

And, lastly, Uberthons says bring all your friends, but, what we really mean is this -  if you have friends or acquaintences who want to come to the Turkeython, but have a choice to make between a turkey in the oven or the Turkeython, Uberthons wants them to do both.  If folks want to run, let's have them run.  A gift from you and Uberthons, let's say.  Running on Thanksgiving morning can be a great tradition, but, if the economy has stolen the money from the running budget, let Uberthons know.  If you want to, please help your friends, or have them email Uberthons at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , and Uberthons will provide an unconditional free registration for them.  They may choose to bring the entire family to enjoy the event - and to that Uberthons says "the more the merrier."  If they want to run, let's get them to the event.  How many friends do you have who would come under these conditions?

See you and your friends at the Turkeython

Alan R.
